The point of the drive is to admire the places along the way lush rainforest, waterfalls, flowers, amazing bamboo forests, blow-holes, river crossings, swimming holes and pools. People, people, people the point of taking "The Road to Hana" isn't to actually "get" anywhere. my advise, do it again, this time do it right, you won't regret it. And by correctly planning your trip, you must have the right resources. In closing: The road to Hana is a must see and do.BUT you will miss a whole bunch of lovely waterfalls, ponds, ocean views, mountains, and food if you don't plan your trip correctly. you don't need to turn around and go back the way you came from.not unless you don't know what you're doing. We started off in the East, drove to the far west on the road to Hana, and then cut across the island to get back to our room. In all, it took us about four hours on this road, but mostly all day to do 3/4 of the island. Remember, a luxury place is more worried about their food presentation, not taste. The burgers!! wow, I always knew you get the best tasting burgers at run down joint's. We stoped in Hana for a burger, yes this small town did look run down, and the rest rooms were in need of updates, but hey, i've peed in worse places. plus, there are a few turn off's that take you "off road" to some lovely waterfalls, and to lovely waters to bathe in. 3: An SUV, the last few miles towards town is a gravel road, most car rental places may charge you if you get stuck on that road.

Multiple times to South and Central America, Multiple Europe locations, Middle East, British and U.S Islands (At least 2x's a year), and yes, several times to ALL of the Hawai'i Islands. So that no one discounts my knowledge on world travel, I am a very frequent travler. I am sad for the ones that truely did miss such beautiful nature, the beautiful waterfalls, the beautiful cliffs and ocean views. I just read the last report about the road to hana "unless you like driving" and reading these negative reports on the road to hana is sad. It is an amazing adventure-Go for it!! You will feel like a great adventurer. It is something I will never forget!! And by the way, we are not young people, but women in middle-age. I will do it every time I am lucky enough to go to Maui. This should be considered an all-day trip as we were gone about 12 hours. AWESOME!! Don't try to do this in just a few hours.

And it's also alot of fun!!! When you are driving on that side, alot of the roads are right along the edge of the mountain, up high, with the ocean right there. The roads (such as they are) are very rough-which is why I recommend the Jeep Wrangler. We are so glad that we made the decision to continue all the way around beyond Hana on the backside of the volcano-it's like you just drove into another world. Most people turn around and go back the way they came because of the roads (or lack of) if you keep going. Don't miss the 7 Sacred Pools-you can swim there if you want. Stop & shop at the roadside shops where the crafters sell their goods. We took our lunch down to the black sand beach & sat on a log to eat. Stop at the "Garden of Eden" for a true tropical paradise. Soak up the rain forest experience & all the waterfalls. Buy snacks & a boxed lunch because you won't find much available on the road. You MUST rent a Jeep Wrangler & start out in Pa'ia at about 6-6:30 am. Don't believe it!!!! My sister & I went in November 2005 & it was the one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. I just read a review stating that the road to Hana was a waste of time.
